Is Vishal Bhardwaj one of the greats?

A well known Bollywood Director.

Yes, I propound.Known to keep a low profile, Vishal Bhardwaj has proved himself time and again as not just a filmmaker par excellence but a composer of high quality. He’s not very well known for his music(like, say, Rahman, R.D.Burman, or even Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy;People remember the songs of Maachis, but don’t  quite associate with the name of Vishal Bhardwaj.), apart from the fact that he himself writes the music of his films.Known more for his brand of offbeat, hard-hitting and realistic cinema based on literary adaptations, mostly Shakespeare and more recently Ruskin Bond, the beauty, originality and a certain timeless quality that i associate with his music is simply remarkable.I vote for him, along with newly-arrived full-time composer Amit Trivedi, as the most original and tasteful music composers in Bollywood today. Now, I’m going to discuss some of his best songs here, so that you, Dear Reader, may open your eyes to the multifaceted talent of Vishal Bhardwaj.

1.Kaminay– Title song(Movie- Kaminay, lyrics- Gulzar, Sung by Vishal Bhardwaj)

What a beauty.Bittersweet song that leaves me with a lump in the throat. The movie is great, by the way.Watch it if you haven’t to get even more out of this song. The sentiment expressed here is not seen very often in Bollywood- this sort of “utterly weary of life and it’s struggles, both internal and external, and blaming no one but yourself for it” thing.Dig the string section at the end!!

2.Dil toh bachcha hain ji(Movie- Ishqiya, Lyrics- Gulzar, Sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan)

Yeah, you’ve heard this one.Gorgeous, lilting melody here, carried by that wonderful rhythm.Great vocal performance by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan.Signature Vishal Bhardwaj tune.

3.Ab mujhe koi intezaar kahan(Movie- Ishqiya, Lyrics- Gulzar, Sung by Rekha Bhardwaj)

Another, lesser known number from Ishqiya. And yes, Rekha is Vishal’s wife.I trust your beginning to see his style;Seductive, is, i think, the right word.

4.Sapne me milti hain(Movie – Satya, Lyrics- Gulzar , Sung by Suresh Wadkar & Asha Bhosle)

Ah, memories.I loved this song as a child(I was 9 years old :-))You know one of those songs that instantly transport you back to those days.I had no idea that Satya was done by Vishal Bhardwaj- just stumbled across it a few days back.Just listen to it carefully. There’s real beauty here. And it’s as romantic as it can get, for all you lovers out there.Sapne me milti hain,o kudi meri sapne me milti hain.Gulzar is just too good.

5.Chhod Aaye Hum Vo Galiyaan (Movie- Maachis, Lyrics- Gulzar, Sung by KK & others)

Very Early.1996.Surely you heard this back then.Along with Chhappa Chhappa Charkha Chale, it created waves in the nation back then, and are much loved songs to this day.

Well, so that’s that.Hope you enjoyed these songs.I urge you to explore more of his music- This was just a sample; There are a great number of amazing songs in Vishal Bhardwaj’s catalogue.Sadly, music of such quality is only too rare in India, whether we are talking about film music or pop music in general. We must cherish the stalwarts.

  1. I am a great fan of his films and movies. He is an exception in mediocre landscape of Bollywood.
